Students and staff at Malcolm X, Rosa Parks, Washington, Berkeley Arts Magnet, Oxford, Thousand Oaks, Cragmont (on Oct 5th) and King Middle School walked and rolled to school as part of the International Walk and Roll to School Day. Safe Routes to Schools supported over 100 Alameda County schools who participated in this international day of awareness that focuses on street safety and the benefits of clean air and exercise. Making it fun to take alternative routes to school helps further the goal of improving air quality and promotes healthy habits for students and families.
Rosa Parks (pictured) reported that over a third of the school participated this year. See how much fun it was by viewing a sampler of Rosa Parks Walk & Roll to School Day Photos.
A new count report published by Alameda County Transportation Commission shows that since 2002, in Alameda County, there has been a 47% increase in pedestrians counted and 75% increase in bicyclists counted during the afternoon commute period.
