Berkeley High School actually began work on this in an earlier plan with the construction of the Jacket Gym, regulation size swimming pool and the dance studio in the Milvia/Allston Way building, which opened in 2004.

Berkeley High's Old Gym, slated for demolition this summer has been closed because it does not meet state seismic standards for students.

Those spaces were designed to replace some of the spaces in the old gym that was demolished in 2012. All of the work on the South of Bancroft Project to date have been funded by Construction Bond Measures A and AA, and now will be completed with Measure I of 2010.

BHS South of Bancroft Community Planning Meeting in October 2004 divided into work groups.

In 2004 the planning process for the work south of Bancroft began, with a series of community meetings and the creation of a BHS South of Bancroft Construction Committee, involving BHS staff and administration; parents, students and community members. The project includes the space where the old gym currently stands and all of the athletic space on the south side of the campus.

The new BHS Stadium includes 2200 bleacher seats, a press booth, athletic offices, locker rooms and athletic storage space.

The new BHS Stadium contains athletic offices locker rooms and athletic storage space. These are located in the 14,309 sq feet of space in three levels under the bleachers and accessible from the rear of the stadium.
The 2000 sq. ft. building located directly south of the stadium will house (from left to right) the snack bar and Berkeley High’s maintenance and operations equipment and vehicles that are previously stored in storage containers. With the exception of two containers used to store emergency supplies (to be used in a major disaster), this has eliminated the containers that have been located on the south end of the field for many years.

The new building has begun construction in Fall, 2012, and will include a soft gym, a 4000 sq. ft. fitness center and other athletic spaces, and 15 new classrooms. The rest of the south end of campus will include a softball field and an open space, doubling as an outdoor atrium for events and activities.
