Music Program Information for Families

All students in grades 4 and 5 receive an instrument as a part of twice per week music classes. In middle school, students can choose to take orchestra, band or chorus, and are also provided an instrument. Here is information families need to know about the program.

Expectations for schools, students and families: Schools will provide a safe place to store instruments during school hours. Teachers will remind students that practicing is a part of nightly homework. Students will bring instruments and books to class and practice 20-30 minutes per day. Families will provide a space for and encourage practicing for success in music class.

Borrowing a BUSD Instrument: The Berkeley District owns band and orchestra instruments which students may borrow for the school year. Parents must complete and sign a Loan Agreement Form and pay a $10 non refundable loan fee (cash only). Strings, rosin, reeds, and valve oil are supplied. Simple repairs are also provided but families are responsible for the replacement cost of broken, lost or stolen instruments.

Assessment: Students grades 3-8 will receive marks based on mastery of grade level music standards and ensemble participation.

Books: All method books, sheet music and music materials are provided to students by BSEP.

Jumpstart Weekends at Cazadero Peforming Arts Camp: Students in eighth grade (fall) and fifth grade (spring) have the opportunity to participate in a Jumpstart retreat at Cazadero with their teachers and high school mentors. Music teachers will provide information.

Renting an instrument from a local shop: Families may choose to rent or buy an instrument instead of using an instrument provided by the district. Local music stores include the following.
