Every year all families are asked to complete the Free and Reduced Price Meal Application. It is critical that all families who attend a K-12 school in the Berkeley Unified School District complete this form, either online or by handing in a completed paper application at one of the school offices (one per family). Completing the form is now easier than ever because of the online application.
Our schools receive federal and state funds based on the percentage of students who qualify for free and reduced price meals. This year, the new funding formula for California public schools provides more money for districts based on the percentage students who qualify for free and reduced price meals. This means, in addition to money for providing meals at school, additional funds are allocated to our district based on the number of students who qualify. Now more than ever, every family needs to fill out the form, even if the criteria for free and reduced price meals is not met.
Nutritious meals are served every school day. Students may buy lunch for $3.25 in elementary schools, $3.75 in middle schools, and $4.25 in high schools. Breakfast is free for all students. Students eligible for free or reduced meals will receive lunch at no cost. You or your child(ren) do not have to be a U.S. citizen to qualify for free or reduced price meals.
