Berkeley High School Advanced Orchestra cellist Will Cayanan was selected to play in the National Honor Orchestra in Nashville, Tennessee during a national conference for the National Association for Music Education (NAfME) in October. Last year he was selected to play in the California All-State Orchestra.
In order to be selected, Will created an audition tape, sent it in just like hundreds of other outstanding cellists from around the country, and he was one of those selected.
William played second chair for the concert. According to his mother, BUSD teacher Candyce Cannon, “The concert was incredible, and it was amazing to see him sitting in the second chair! We are so proud of him. The pieces that they played were very difficult and the orchestra was able to put it together in just two and a half days. Miriam Burns was the conductor. She has quite an impressive resume and she and William struck up a friendship. We are really grateful that his music teacher Karen Wells encouraged him to audition, and his zero period orchestra teacher Mary Dougherty for all of her support.”
Hear Will and the entire Berkeley High Band and Orchestra at their fall concert on December 13th, 7 p.m. in the BHS Community Theater.
