Representatives from the American Cancer Society and the Western Growers Foundation visited the Malcolm X Elementary School Garden to see and taste the “Weedo”, a burrito-style wrap of various greens that students collect and eat in the garden. In the process, they also learned about what Berkeley kids like to eat, and the benefits of garden-based education.
With as many children choosing to be in the garden during recess as during the garden classes, it was easy for the visitors to observe how much the students love to be in the garden. The Western Growers Association provides a grant for the Malcolm X garden, and welcomed their friends from the American Cancer Society to see the impressive garden-based education program they support.
“It’s amazing. These students are able to demonstrate more than basic knowledge of the nutritional value of everything in the garden,” commented American Cancer Society’s Sr. Vice President Carolyn Williams-Goldman during the visit, “And it’s obvious that they really enjoy their time here.”
