At Oxford’s Friday morning community meeting, long-time Berkeley teacher Jackie Omania shared her Green Educator Leadership Award with the community that helped her reduce waste and promote the health of the environment. Over the last several years, she has enlisted more than 100 students to participate in Green Team student activities – performing skits about the 4Rs (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, Rot), serving as waste monitors at lunch, as well as motivating parents to start both a book and Halloween costume exchange, and realize the beauty of reuse.
Ms. Omania has been one of Berkeley’s leading teachers with the Green Star Schools Program, through a partnership between our school district and the Green Schools Initiative. Ms. Omania was recognized for “her leadership in turning her Oxford Elementary School into zero waste superstars.” She was the only individual to receive the award in a group that included the City of San Francisco! The honor was recognized with a student performance, and you can check out both here.
