This year’s Chávez Huerta Commemoration contest took place from March 8 to April 8. This year’s topic was Climate Change, and 100% of our elementary schools participated with a record number of entries. This was the first year that visual art and poetry were added to the essay contest. We celebrated the winning entries with students and their families on Wednesday April 27th, in the BUSD Board Room, and you are encouraged to view photos and see the celebration for yourself.

Both César Chávez and Dolores Huerta saw the connection between the rights of the farm workers and climate change. They both spoke up many years ago about how our climate would be destroyed by the poisons (pesticides) that farmers used to protect their crops and wealth, without regard to the safety and well-being of the humans (farm workers) who harvested those crops. The prompts asked students to envision a world today, had we listened to Chávez and Huerta and protected the earth.
This event is a part of the Chávez Huerta Commemorative Period activities, in collaboration with the Commemorative Committee.
