Congratulations to the BHS boys soccer team for defeating De La Salle 2-1 in Division 1 of the North Coast Section (NCS) finals on Saturday night.
“This was only the second time the Berkeley Jackets have been to the finals, the first time was in 2004 when they won,” said BHS Athletic Director Britta Fjelstrom.
The Jackets “claimed victory after a 1-1 (Tiez Allison) score in regulation time sent them to double overtime with no score,” Fjelstrom reported. “The game was won in Penalty Kicks (4-3) with an outstanding performance by the entire team and great saves by Senior Goalie Roin Flynn. Making the win even more special was the incredible support from our student fans who easily outnumbered the DLS student fans 2:1. … Special thanks to Coach André Hebert and the entire soccer coaching staff.”
Fjelstrom also expressed support for the loyal fans who cheered the team on during the season and in the title match, where they mobbed the field after the winning kick.
“Berkeley High FANS are AMAZING!!!” she wrote in a message to the Berkeley High community. To those at Saturday’s match, she wrote, “Fans, we are impressed by your enthusiasm, your red and gold attire, your cheers (always positive), your admiration and joy for the players and your sheer happiness sharing in the celebration on the field.”
The victory was featured in articles in the East Bay Times/Mercury News and in Berkeleyside, which printed the account of BHS Jacket Sports Editor Liat Levin.
