Update: Berkeley High School Redesign Special School Board Meeting: Wed., Feb. 15, 6-8pm
The School Board voted unanimously to proceed with a redesign of the 9th grade program at Berkeley High. The final proposal will be brought to the Board for first reading in May and final approval in June, for implementation for the incoming 9th graders in Fall 2018. You can watch the Feb. 15 board discussion here.
At a special board meeting at 6:00 pm next Wednesday, February 15, the School Board will further consider a Berkeley High School Redesign Proposal to create structural changes at Berkeley High School beginning in the Fall of 2018.
Based on a broad body of research and after more than 18 months of research, dialogue, faculty and community engagement, the proposal to begin in the 2018-19 school year focuses on four main areas of redesign:
- Personalization,
- Improving our student assignment system,
- The transition between 8th and 9th grade, and
- Collaboration time for teachers.
An outline of the BHS Redesign proposal and additional information is available on the Berkeley High School web page, including detailed responses to Board members’ questions from the January 25th meeting.
Families are welcome to tune in to hear the board discussion, which will be broadcast online on the district YouTube Channel and on B-TV Cable Channel 32, or to attend the meeting in person (Berkeley Unified School District Board Room at 1231 Addison St.). The first 30 minutes of the meeting will be reserved for public comment.
The goal of the February 15th Special Board Meeting is to determine whether or not the Board would like staff to proceed with specific planning of this proposal. If the Board approves the current redesign proposal in principle on February 15, the proposal will return to the Board for a first reading in May, and possible final approval in June.
We will keep the community informed as to next steps following the board meeting.
