Dear BUSD Community,
The Berkeley Unified School District (BUSD) Board of Education voted unanimously to approve Enikia Ford Morthel as the District’s new Superintendent at the Wednesday, May 18 School Board meeting. Ford Morthel, who currently serves as the Deputy Superintendent of Instruction for the San Francisco Unified School District (SFUSD), will begin her work at Berkeley Unified in July.
School Board President Ka’Dijah Brown described Ford Morthel as a “relational leader” and a “champion for equity education” at the Wednesday evening meeting. She shared she was “impressed, inspired, and enthused” by Ford Morthel, a sentiment echoed by other School Board members.
Ford Morthel thanked the Board of Education for their confidence in her leadership and the many BUSD stakeholders and partners who were engaged in the Superintendent search process. She shared that Berkeley is the community where she was “made and fortified as a social justice educator,” referring to receiving her undergraduate and graduate degrees in education from the University of California at Berkeley.
“There is so much that is unique and rich about Berkeley as a city, as a district, as a community–most notably the passion and engagement of the BUSD community and their dedication to equity, anti-racism, diversity, and excellence,” said Ford Morthel in comments made at last night’s meeting. “I am excited to be a part of that richness, yet again, in this new capacity.”
Ford Morthel thanked outgoing Superintendent Stephens, noting she was “grateful to Dr. Stephens and team for all they have done to advance this mission to date and for all the ways they have positioned BUSD to build upon this work.” She also thanked friends, family members, and colleagues who joined the meeting to “witness and share this moment.”
Ford Morthel, describing herself as “ humbled by the awesome responsibility it is to be a steward of such a dynamic mission and vision,” closed by saying she looked forward to getting to know the BUSD community in July and partnering with the community to “make excellence, equity and engagement real and true for every student in our district.”

Estimada Comunidad en BUSD:
El Board of Education de Berkeley Unified School District (BUSD) votó por unanimidad para aprobar a Enikia Ford Morthel como la nueva Superintendente del Distrito en la reunión del School Board del miércoles 18 de mayo. Ford Morthel, quien actualmente sirve como la Superintendente Adjunto de Instrucción (Deputy Superintendent of Instruction) para San Francisco Unified School District (SFUSD), comenzará su trabajo en Berkeley Unified en julio.
La presidente del School Board, Ka’Dijah Brown, describió a Ford Morthel como un “líder relacional” y un “defensor de la educación en equidad” en la reunión del miércoles por la noche. Compartió que estaba “impresionada, inspirada y entusiasmada” por Ford Morthel, un sentimiento al cual se hizo eco en otros miembros del School Board.
Ford Morthel agradeció al Board of Education por su confianza en su liderazgo y a las muchas partes interesadas y colaboradores de BUSD los cuales participaron en el proceso de búsqueda del Superintendente. Ella compartió que Berkeley es la comunidad en la que se “forjó y fortaleció como educadora de la justicia social”, refiriéndose a que recibió su titulo de licenciatura y graduación en educación de University of California en Berkeley.
“Hay muchas cosas que son únicas y valiosas en Berkeley como ciudad, como distrito, como comunidad, sobre todo la pasión y el compromiso de la comunidad de BUSD y su dedicación a la equidad, antirracismo, diversidad y la excelencia”, mencionó Ford Morthel en los comentarios realizados en la reunión de anoche. “Estoy entusiasmada de formar parte de esa riqueza, una vez más, en este nuevo cargo”.
Ford Morthel agradeció al Superintendente Stephens, señalando que estaba “agradecida con el Dr. Stephens y el equipo por todo lo que han hecho para avanzar en esta misión hasta la fecha y por todas las formas en que han posicionado a BUSD para construir sobre este trabajo.” También agradeció a los amigos, familiares y colegas que se unieron a la reunión para “ser testigos y compartir este momento”.
Ford Morthel, describiéndose a sí misma como “conmovida por la asombrosa responsabilidad que supone ser un administrador de una misión y una visión tan dinámicas”, concluyó diciendo que esperaba conocer a la comunidad de BUSD en julio y asociarse con la comunidad para “hacer que la excelencia, la equidad y el compromiso sean reales y verdaderos para cada estudiante de nuestro distrito”.
