Dear BUSD Community,
On August 15, the 2022-23 BUSD school year will begin. The amazing folks that make up BUSD are eager and ready to welcome our students and families to what we anticipate will be an awesome school year! I am particularly excited to start this year as your new Superintendent.
In addition to working with staff to ensure that our schools are welcoming, rigorous and joyful, I will spend my first 90 days in BUSD listening and learning. During this time, I will visit our schools and classrooms; meet with students, families, staff, and community partners to learn about our district; and otherwise enjoy getting to know many of you! I will be looking for examples of how we are meeting our commitment to “the 4 E’s,” providing every student access to Excellence, Equity, Engagement and Enrichment, and our mission to “enable and inspire our diverse student body to achieve academic excellence and make positive contributions to our world.”
BUSD has a bold goal of ensuring that “all young people in Berkeley grow up with equitable opportunities to achieve high outcomes and realize their full potential,” and “ending the racial predictability of academic achievement” that exists in the district (2020 Vision for Berkeley’s Children & Youth). I am inspired and humbled to champion this vision!
I believe that Berkeley Unified is particularly poised to make good on these promises to students and families. There has been much progress towards this end. It is my goal to lead the district to the next phase of realizing this mission. Doing so requires humility, collaboration, an unwavering commitment and deep listening to those who have been doing and are impacted by the work. That’s why, during my first 90 days, I will focus on centering those experiences and perspectives and tapping into the collective wisdom of the community to better understand how BUSD can continuously improve to maximize the experiences and outcomes of the students we serve.
Doing so will provide me with information, input, and ultimately insight into how best to strengthen and build upon the current and historical successes of our schools and move the district closer to making the 4 E’s a reality for each and every student.
Thank you for welcoming me into the BUSD Community. I have enjoyed getting to know so many of you already. I look forward to meeting many more in the months to come and ultimately partnering with you in service of our students. Our charge is bold and ambitious. It won’t happen overnight, and it will only happen with us working together! I’m Ready! BUSD…we are ready!

Estimada Comunidad en BUSD:
El año escolar 2022-23 en BUSD comenzará el 15 de agosto. Las increíbles personas que conforman BUSD están ansiosas y listas para dar la bienvenida a nuestros estudiantes y familias a lo que anticipamos será un año escolar fantástico. Estoy particularmente emocionada de comenzar este año como su nueva Superintendente.
Además de trabajar con el personal para garantizar que nuestras escuelas sean acogedoras, rigurosas y alegres, pasaré mis primeros 90 días en BUSD escuchando y aprendiendo. Durante este tiempo visitaré nuestras escuelas y salones de clase; me reuniré con los estudiantes, las familias, el personal y los socios de la comunidad para aprender acerca de nuestro distrito; y, por otro lado, ¡disfrutaré conociendo a muchos de ustedes! Estaré buscando ejemplos de como cumplimos nuestro compromiso con “las 4 E’s,” ofreciendo a cada estudiante acceso a la Excelencia, Equidad, Involucramiento y Enriquecimiento, y nuestra misión de “capacitar e inspirar a nuestro diverso cuerpo estudiantil para lograr la excelencia académica y hacer contribuciones positivas a nuestro mundo”.
BUSD tiene el firme propósito de garantizar que “todos los jóvenes en Berkeley crezcan con oportunidades equitativas para alcanzar resultados elevados y desarrollar todo su potencial” y así “terminar con la previsibilidad racial del rendimiento académico” la cual existe en el distrito (Vision 2020 para los Niños y Jóvenes en Berkeley). Me siento inspirada y honrada al promover esta Vision.
Creo que Berkeley Unified está especialmente preparado para cumplir con estas promesas para los estudiantes y familias. Se ha avanzado mucho en este sentido. Mi objetivo es llevar al distrito a la siguiente fase de cumplimiento de esta misión. El hacerlo requiere humildad, colaboración, un compromiso inquebrantable y una profunda capacidad de escuchar a aquellos que lo han estado haciendo y están siendo impactados por el trabajo. Debido a eso, durante mis primeros 90 días, me enfocaré en centrar esas experiencias y perspectivas y en aprovechar la sabiduría colectiva de la comunidad para entender mejor cómo BUSD puede mejorar continuamente para maximizar las experiencias y los resultados de los estudiantes a los que servimos.
El hacerlo me proporcionará información, aportaciones y, en última instancia, conocimientos acerca de la mejor manera de reforzar y aprovechar los éxitos actuales e históricos de nuestras escuelas y de acercar al distrito a hacer realidad las 4 E’s para todos y cada uno de los estudiantes.
Gracias por darme la bienvenida a la Comunidad BUSD. He disfrutado el estar conociendo a muchos de ustedes. Espero con entusiasmo el conocer a muchos más en los próximos meses y, en suma, colaborar con ustedes al servicio de nuestros estudiantes. Nuestro compromiso es intrépido y ambicioso. No sucederá de la noche a la mañana, y sólo será una realidad ¡si trabajamos unidos! ¡Estoy Lista! ¡BUSD…estamos listos!
