Dear Berkeley Unified Community,
We are nearing the end of 2023 and getting ready for our winter break. I continue to marvel at and appreciate the many ways our community comes together to celebrate and care for one another. Just this month we gathered for the grand opening of the Berkeley High School (BHS) Wellness Center; the re-launch of the BHS Holiday Meal; the district’s toy giveaway, supported by the OFEE family engagement team; school concerts; dance performances; and celebrations like the ones hosted at Rosa Parks and Cragmont Elementary Schools and Longfellow Middle School.
As we go into the holiday season, I am grateful for the work so many have done at BUSD–our staff, families, and school community–to center our students. Over the past several months, we have demonstrated love, compassion, and the seeking of understanding in the midst of challenging times.
I also acknowledge that so many of our hearts continue to be heavy as we witness ongoing violence in Israel and Palestine and the devastating toll on the children living in the region. As James Baldwin wrote, “The children are always ours, every single one of them, all over the globe.”
The district has created this webpage with resources for families and educators to guide students in sharing about, discussing, and processing what they are experiencing.
Remember that our schools will be closed for winter break from Monday, December 25, 2023 through Friday, January 5, 2024. We look forward to coming together again in the New Year, when schools reopen on Monday, January 8, 2024.
I’ve been thinking a lot about the symbolism of light in traditions and celebrations typical of the winter months. For many, light symbolizes knowledge, goodness, hope, and belief. Lights, like candles lit for many celebrations, are a source of positivity and warmth–an invitation to gather. Wherever you go, whomever you enjoy this time with, and whatever holiday you may celebrate, may you be surrounded by love and light…and may you share your light with others.

Estimada Comunidad en Berkeley USD:
Nos acercamos al final del 2023 y nos preparamos para el descanso de invierno. Sigo maravillándome y apreciando las muchas maneras en que nuestra comunidad se une para celebrar y cuidarse entre sí. En este mismo mes nos hemos reunido para la gran inauguración del Centro de Bienestar (Wellness Center) en Berkeley High School (BHS); el relanzamiento de la Comida Festiva (Holiday Meal) de BHS; la entrega de juguetes del distrito, apoyado por el equipo de involucramiento familiar de OFEE; conciertos escolares; espectáculos de danza; y celebraciones tales como las organizadas en las Escuelas Primarias Rosa Parks y Cragmont y en la Escuela Secundaria Longfellow.
A medida que avanzamos hacia la temporada festiva, estoy agradecida por el trabajo que tantos han hecho en BUSD–nuestro personal, familias y la comunidad escolar–para centrar a nuestros estudiantes. En los últimos meses, hemos demostrado amor, compasión y la búsqueda del entendimiento en medio de tiempos difíciles.
También reconozco que muchos de nuestros corazones siguen entristecidos al ser testigos de la violencia permanente en Israel y Palestina y de las devastadoras consecuencias para los niños que viven en la región. Tal como lo escribió James Baldwin: “Los niños son siempre nuestros, cada uno de ellos, alrededor de todo el planeta”.
El distrito ha creado esta página web con recursos para que las familias y los educadores guíen a los estudiantes en el momento de compartir, debatir y procesar lo que están experimentando.
Recuerde que nuestras escuelas estarán cerradas durante el descanso de invierno desde el lunes, 25 de diciembre, 2023 hasta el viernes, 5 de enero, 2024. Esperamos volver a reunirnos el Año Nuevo, cuando las escuelas abran sus puertas nuevamente el lunes. 8 de enero, 2024.
He estado pensando mucho en el significado de la luz en las tradiciones y celebraciones típicas de los meses de invierno. Para muchos, la luz representa el conocimiento, la bondad, la esperanza y la fe. Las luces, tales como las velas encendidas en muchas celebraciones, son una fuente de positividad y calidez,–una invitación a reunirse. Vaya usted a donde vaya, disfrute con quien disfrute de este tiempo y celebre el día festivo que usted celebre, que esté usted rodeado de amor y luz… y que comparta su luz con los demás.
