Berkeley’s 2020 Vision’s College & Career Awareness Week is a week-long series of events from March 11-15, 2019 designed to engage Berkeley’s students in college and career related activities beginning on March 11, 2019. Our goal is to create several opportunities for students to “seize their future” now by participating, exploring, and making a plan for next steps as they imagine and learn about college and career possibilities.
There will be special programming at each school site, including opportunities for guest speakers to share information about their professions with students in various formats.
“College SWAG” Monday
For the launch on Monday, March 11, BUSD employees will be wearing their college “swag,” and throughout the week staff will be talking to students about their career paths.
All K-8 school libraries are hosting special career-related readings and book recommendations, some of which are noted on the poster: What will YOU do?
Exposure to Career Technical Education (CTE) Pathways
Middle school students will learn about classes and career oriented programming available in high school and meet high school students from the Robotics Class and the EMT Tech program. Students participating in the AVID and other middle school support programs will be taking a tour of the new CTE spaces at Berkeley High School, including the Carpentry Shop & Maker Space for Design Innovation.
College and Career-related Panels and Workshops
The events for high school students consist of a series of informational panels, “TED-talk” type presentations, and career exploration opportunities.
Community College Fair
Many of Berkeley High School’s graduating students decide to begin their college studies at one of the many great community colleges in our area. Seven of the community colleges in our area will be attending the “community college fair” event being held as part of the College & Career Awareness Week’s activities.
Parent Night: Opportunities After High School
College and Career Awareness Week is an annual project of Berkeley’s 2020 Vision: Equity in Education, a citywide initiative that strives to eliminate racial disparities in academic achievement in Berkeley’s public schools. Through this partnership, Berkeley Unified School District, the City of Berkeley, Berkeley City College, UC Berkeley and other partners seek to close Berkeley’s educational “opportunity gap.” These activities are part of this partnership’s effort to promote a college-going and career-focused culture for all students in our community. A representation of our many partners can be seen in the set of logos below.
