Spanish is the second language of California and becoming biliterate in two languages opens opportunities for students and improves educational outcomes, most notably for Latino/Hispanic students.
After considerable study and community engagement through on-site research, community forums, and the work of the Two-Way Immersion (TWI) Task Force, the School Board voted in June, 2012 that Sylvia Mendez Elementary School (formerly LeConte Elementary) would become a district-wide TWI school and all entering Sylvia Mendez kindergartners would participate in the TWI program. TWI Programs formerly at Rosa Parks and Cragmont have been phased out.
