Berkeley Unified School District Shows Gains on the API and AYP
BUSD had an overall growth of 5 points on the Academic Performance Index (API). BUSD saw overall API increases of 31 points for English Learners, and 11 points for Socio-Economically Disadvantaged students as a result of targeted instruction to increase background knowledge and academic vocabulary. Gardening & Cooking programs bloom throughout Berkeley schools
The Network for a Healthy California, a federal program, funds garden and cooking programs at 6 of our elementary schools, 2 middle schools, as well as the preschools, Berkeley High and B-Tech. At King Middle School, the venerable Edible Schoolyard has been providing garden and kitchen experience for students since 1995.
Theatre thrives at Berkeley middle schools
The middle schools are alive with theater and musical performances, funded by Berkeley’s BSEP (Berkeley Schools Excellence Program) special tax. More information on BSEP can be found by clicking here, and information on the grade 3-8 music program, can be found by clicking here.

Longfellow and Willard Middle School Jazz Bands thrilled the audience at Yoshi’s Oakland on May 2nd. The benefit performances raised $1200 for Berkeley Unified Schools’ Middle School Music program.
