NOTE – The 2022-2023 COVID-19 case dashboard will not be updated after Friday, June 2, 2023.
BUSD will report all confirmed COVID-19 cases among personnel and students physically present at district schools and facilities during their infectious period for COVID-19. The infectious period begins two days before the onset of symptoms. If the case did not have symptoms, the infectious period is considered to be two days prior to the testing date. Note that personnel includes contractors, substitutes, and others working at BUSD schools and facilities.
WHAT’S NOT REPORTED
The District will not report cases of students engaged in 100% independent study or staff working remotely, nor will it report cases that occur during school holidays, travel or other circumstances where the COVID-19 case was not present at a school or district facility during the infectious period. Additionally, community cases among individuals or groups using a district facility when students and staff are not present (SATs, use of a play structure over a weekend) are not reported. For confidentiality purposes, names and identifying information are not reported, and students and staff cases are reported together in a single category.
DASHBOARD UPDATES
The dashboard will be updated within 24 hours of the District learning of a confirmed COVID-19 case when that occurs on a Monday – Thursday. Cases reported on Fridays and weekends will be added to the dashboard no later than on the following Monday.

Why are there .5 cases reported?
This occurs when an individual who is a confirmed positive case was at two BUSD locations during their infectious period.
Why would a case be removed from the dashboard?
This would occur if the district first believed a student or staff member was on campus or at a BUSD facility while infectious, but later learned that this was not the case. In this instance, we will remove the case from the dashboard.
WHEN A STUDENT OR STAFF MEMBER IS CONFIRMED POSITIVE FOR COVID-19
Parents/guardians or staff must immediately report a COVID-19 case to the district. A student who has tested positive must remain at home, or go home immediately if the positive test result is received while on campus. A staff member who received a positive test result should remain at home, or report their case to the district so that they can be sent home immediately. BUSD’s Case Response Team will work to immediately coordinate with the employee or parent/guardian to determine:
- When the case (the person with COVID-19) was on campus or at a District facility
- When the infectious period began
- Who in the school community or at a facility was a close contact with the case
Every school campus will have an isolation room(s) where students with COVID-19 symptoms will wait for parent/guardian pickup. Parents are expected to come to school immediately to pick up their child.
The school or facility staff will be notified of a confirmed case that was on campus during the infectious period. No student or staff names or identifying information will be shared.
Students and staff with symptoms, a confirmed COVID-19 positive case, or who have been in close contact with a confirmed case, will be directed to follow protocols for returning to school, as detailed in guidance from the California Department of Public Health.
