BUSD Fitness Challenges – Rules for Participating
For the last couple of years, BUSD, hosted a fitness team challenge through a Kaiser funded grant for Thrive Across Hawaii (America). Over 150 employees joined in to support the District’s initiative of health and wellness. Now that the District has changed to CALPERs Health Plans, the Kaiser sponsored wellness program is no longer available. After considering many fitness APPs, the District decided to use the Endomondo fitness APP for the next BUSD fitness challenge for 2017. The 45 day challenge started today, April 17th and ends on May 31, 2017. For all the employees who would like to join us in a BUSD fitness challenge(s), please sign up at www.endomondo.com/home and review the following or attached instructions:
You may also download the Endomondo App on your phone. You must sign up using your District Gmail address as your user name and establish a password. We are requiring that you add an icon, symbol or photo so that it is easy to identify you throughout the challenge. This is not a BUSD App, therefore, you should manage privacy using the privacy settings. The BUSD challenges are private to BUSD employees only.
1. After signing in, you must click on “Friend” and search for Javetta Cleveland I will add you as a friend. You must be a friend of Javetta Cleveland in order to receive an invite to the 3 BUSD fitness challenges. You may also friend others that are a part of the challenge if you would like. We are requiring that you add an icon, symbol or photo so that it is easy to identify you throughout the challenge.
2. After you are accepted as a friend, you will be invited to join 3 BUSD fitness challenges. You will receive 3 notifications. When you receive your notifications, click on bell icon at the top of the APP or website and accept challenge(s). You must accept one or more challenges.
3. There are 3 fitness challenges and you must join at least 1 challenge. All 3 challenges begin today, April 17th and end on May 31st (45 Days). You can also join all 3 challenges. After you have been invited to join challenges, you will find challenges under “Challenges/My Challenges”. The first challenge is the number of active minutes and each exercise must be at least 15 minutes. You can only choose exercises included in the challenge so make sure you click on the exercises box in the challenge to see all 20 exercises included in the challenge. All exercises listed in Endomondo are not included in the BUSD Fitness Challenge. The second challenge is the number of workouts and each workout must be at least 30 minutes to qualify. The third challenge is the most calories and each workout must be at least 15 minutes.
4. You can record your time by using the workout timer on your phone and selecting one of the eligible exercises. Your selected exercise will record to all of the challenges that you are participating in as long as your exercise and length of time is eligible. These challenges do not include step tracking. Walking (Fitness) is included in all of the challenges. We are requiring you to use an exercise included in the list of exercises listed in each challenge. You can manually log in your time on a computer by logging into the website and click on “Add Workout”. You can add the number of minutes of your workout and type of exercise. The calories are predetermined based on the type of exercises and cannot be input yourself.
5. You must log your time within 48 hours. We are asking that if you miss logging in within 48 hours that you just continue participating by logging in your future workouts. This will prevent challengers from thinking they are moving up the chart and then finding out that someone who hasn’t logged passes them by logging in more than 2 days. The best way to log is using the Endomondo timer because it logs your exercise and time in real time.
6. If you have concerns about a participant, please do not send a group text regarding your concern. Please email Deputysuperintendent@berkeley.net to address your concern.
7. Prizes: The top 2 winners of each challenge will receive a Brimma Sports Bottle (18oz Leak proof with Flip top Lid), Fitness Towel and a Dumbbell Stress Ball that states “ BUSD Fitness Challenge Top 25”. The top 25 winners for each challenge will receive a Dumbbell Stress Ball. There will also be other prizes including Fitbit zips given out for those who meet a unique challenge along the way. Thanks for participating.

Dear Classified Employees,
A few questions have arisen regarding the status of the Classification Study since my last email to classified employees. Here is an update on the timeline for the approval and implementation of the study:
- November 6th – Commission will discuss Board recommendations on the study
- Mid-November – The Commission may set a Special Meeting to consider acceptance of the study
- December – If the Commission accepts the study, the Commission will send a memo to the Board informing them of their acceptance and request that the Board approve the study and begin negotiations with the respective unions
- January – The Board may consider approval of the study.
- February – If study is approved, negotiations may begin.
- Once negotiations are concluded, implementation of the study can begin. Implementation could take place immediately for non-represented employees and will be implemented at different times for union employees depending on the conclusion of negotiations for each union.
I will provide continued updates on the study as we move forward.

Dear Classified Employees,
All BCCE members now have a ratified contract, and we are in the process of implementing the related salary and benefit agreements. We are working quickly to make sure BCCE members receive the salary adjustments as soon as possible.
- All salaried BCCE members will see the 4.55% on-going salary increase reflected in their October 31st paycheck.
- A retroactive payment for school year 2013-14 and 2014-15 (July 1 to September 30th) will be made in one separate payment by the end of November.
- Increases in the District’s health benefit contribution cap for Employee Plus One (new cap $940.71) and Employee Plus Two (new cap $1,073.90) will be effective January 1, 2015. New rate charts will be on District’s website at www.berkeleyschools.net/departments/benefits/ on October 29th and hard copies will be mailed to sites on November 4th.
With regard to the Classification & Compensation Study, on October 22, 2014, the School Board approved staff’s recommendation to the Personnel Commission that no current employee will receive a pay reduction as a result of the study. The Personnel Commission and the Board must approve the study prior to proceeding to negotiations on the impact of the study. There will be more information from me as we move forward.
