Conversations among various stakeholders over the past few years have centered around the District’s extended learning program, which includes both summer and after school programs. Both programs do many things exceptionally well and both have significant room for improvement. With the intention of strengthening both programs, the Superintendent has convened an Extended Learning Taskforce (ELT). The charge of the ELT is to review various aspects of the summer and after school programs and make recommendations to the Superintendent for improvement.
The ELT is divided into two subcommittees; one focused on summer school and the other on after school. The ELT represents a variety of stakeholder groups and includes parents representing students participating in representative programs (BEARS and LEARNS, elementary and middle school, special education, Title 1), key district administrators, a school board member, representatives from the Berkeley Federation of Teachers and Berkeley Council of Classified Employees, a representative from City of Berkeley Parks and Recreation, and subject matter experts.
