Transitional Kindergarten
Students in Transitional Kindergarten in Berkeley Unified School District (BUSD) build the foundation of number sense and geometry through play and developmentally appropriate instruction. Frequent opportunities to count, sort, compare, describe, and measure inspire exploration of quantities, patterns, and shapes; and encourage students to use mathematics to make sense of their everyday lives and the world around them.

Elementary (Kindergarten – 5th Grade)
Kindergarten through 5th grade students build a solid foundation in understanding our number system from early counting to place value concepts and fractional quantities. While students continue to expand their vocabulary for describing and measuring shapes and space, much of the focus in elementary classes is on making meaning of operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division). Students develop algebraic thinking and procedural fluency as they solve problems in a variety of contexts, including applications that challenge students to reason with data and model real world situations, deepening their understanding of how mathematics can explain, predict, and impact our world.

- Grades K – 5 Curriculum: Eureka Math
Middle School (6th – 8th Grade)
BUSD middle school students continue to develop their conceptual understanding of mathematics with an engaging and interactive curriculum that empowers students by centering their understandings, ideas, and problem solving skills. In grades 6th through 8th, students build a foundation for high school mathematics and beyond by developing their proportional reasoning, fluency with positive and negative rational numbers, algebraic understanding, reasoning with data, and applying geometric principles.

High School (9th-12th Grade)
Berkeley High School (BHS) students build a deep understanding of mathematics concepts and their interconnectedness through a three-year integrated mathematics sequence that covers topics in algebra, geometry, statistics, and analytics (pre-calculus). Through strong instruction in Common Core-aligned courses, BHS is committed to developing confident problem solvers and critical thinkers who are prepared to use mathematics to make sense of their world and make an impact on many fields, including those in STEM (science, technology, engineering, math).
After successfully completing the Math 1-3 sequence, all students will be prepared for a variety of math courses during their senior year, including AP Calculus AB and AP Statistics. Students completing an Advanced Math Sequence 1-3 will also be prepared to take AP Calculus BC or IB – HL Math.
