Welcome to the Physical Education program at Berkeley Unified School District. Our program is designed to promote the physical, mental, and social well-being of our students. High-quality physical education instruction is essential for developing fundamental motor skills, self-confidence, and a commitment to lifelong physical activity.
Elementary
In Berkeley Unified School District (BUSD), elementary students engage in a structured Physical Education (PE) program designed to promote physical health and skill development from a young age. The curriculum follows the California Physical Education Model Content Standards, which emphasize the development of fundamental motor skills, movement patterns, and physical fitness concepts.
Middle School
Middle school students continue their physical education journey with a focus on building upon the foundational skills acquired in elementary school. The curriculum includes more complex motor skills, movement strategies, and the integration of physical fitness activities that promote cardiovascular health, muscle strength, endurance, and flexibility.
High School
At the high school level, BUSD offers a comprehensive and varied PE program that aims to develop students’ physical fitness, motor skills, and knowledge about health and wellness. Students are required to complete 20 credits of Physical Education, spread over four semesters to meet graduation requirements. The program includes a diverse range of activities, from traditional team sports to individual fitness and conditioning programs. Students can also explore elective courses that may include advanced adventure/outdoor activities, aerobic activities, and dance, among others.
