In Berkeley, transportation accounts for 54% of yearly greenhouse gas emissions! BUSD is committed to reducing its transportation carbon footprint by reducing single-family car trips to less than 20% by 2025, with 80% of students who live within a 2-mile radius getting to school via Active Transportation (walking and biking).
Parent Transportation Survey
Our team is gathering simple transportation data for the District! If you are a parent or caregiver please take 5 minutes to fill out this short survey about your travel habits. The information you provide us will help our team understand the transportation needs of BUSD families.
Safe Routes to School Partnership
The Alameda County Safe Routes to Schools (SR2S) Program organizes and supports fun, educational activities that encourage families to walk, bike, carpool, and take transit to school. We proudly report that ALL Berkeley public schools are participating in the program.

Electric Buses and Vehicles
In the Fall of 2021, eight electric school buses were added to the District’s fleet. The new electric buses, which now make up a quarter of the district’s bus fleet, are intended to reduce emissions and children’s exposure to pollutants. In 2023, the District purchased three electric vans to add to the Maintenance and Nutrition Service departments. We are actively working to add more electric vehicles to department fleets as they are made available.
